A Monday Master's Moment XXXXV: My Fatherly Cry For Us (6.22.09)

I had an incredible week in DC and can't wait to share a nugget or two from lessons learned and experiences, but that'll have to wait.
Father's Day is on hand, and I have some thoughts.
I expect many emails with ranging opines.
I'm fearful we are missing it on many accounts.
I got a message from a friend I treasure recently.
This person, who has been growing spiritually, shared that with ball games 6 of 7 days typically there is no time for church or other similar activities.
Another friend shared at a local establishment he has been a "terrible father" and "terrible husband" for too long.
We can't let that continue, can we?
I just finished a great book, "Championship Fathering," where the three principles of loving, coaching, and modeling are shared.  Dads to kids, and dads to other dads.
It does seem that simple.
Yet we still complicate it.
Jeff Pinkleton
I notice on facebook, I see a lot of status updates related to children and sports.  Team accomplishments and individuals successes.
How about as families?  How about children that move forward in faith.
I love when my kids listen to the Toby Mac live CD, they hear him talking about us "being in passionate pursuit of You (Jesus)."
I want that. I want them to want that.
We would never get excited about a child's third place consolation victory in light of first place.
The title is what we are after.  Yet we settle with family and faith all too often.
Remember, I have little figured out.
Before being a dad, I used to get the line ... "You'll be a great dad, you have worked with all those kids (in youth ministry for 19 years)."
My response was always the same, still is.  "I have no track record with the four in my house though."
Mark Batterson, www.evotional.com and sr. pastor of National Community Church in DC, who I met for coffee last week has a goal of discipling 1 million men in fathering children.
That speaks life to me, and I find that to be a ridiculously incredible goal.
A life in that pursuit will be highly valuable.
Let me cover one extreme here, for balance sake.
If we achieve all life has, and miss it at home, we have failed, as dads and families.
If we thrive at home, without being others- or outwardly-focused, I still think we fail.
It's a both and.
We can gain the whole world and lose our soul.
Let's gain Christ and what He has for us, and lose everything that steals from what He has.
Now that that is said, ready for the emails ;o)

A Monday Master's Moment XXXXIV: Directionally Challenged Hands

I don't know about you, but music speaks to me, big-time.
Always has, always will.
I go through seasons where a given song either feels like I wrote it, or it was penned for me.
Jars of Clay's latest hit, "Two Hands," seems to peg me too well.
One of my favorite titles of a book (good read, too) is A Long Walk In The Same Direction. My faith is challenging enough, with my motives and times to follow self, ... I struggle with the straight line of obedience and the endurance needed, just by title alone.
A long walk for me, better end in some excellent pie or a donut.  Same direction refers to concentration, and I've been excused a time or two of being focus-challenged.
All that to say, the lyrics of this song are so good, that I wanted this to stand in as my MMM this week.
I'm sure some of you will comment about your parallels here too. Jeff Pinkleton

TWO HANDS ... Jars of Clay

I’ve been living out of sanity
I’ve been splitting hairs and blurring lines
I am a house that is divided
In my heart and in my mind
Chorus*
*I use one hand to pull closer
The other to push you away
If I had two hands doing the same thing
Lifted high, lifted high*

I have a broken disposition
I’m a liar who thirsts for the truth
And while I ache for faith to hold me
I need to feel the scars and see the proof
(Chorus)
And if we just keep digging we can reach the foundation
Of our souls
And if we just keep cutting all the chains from our hearts
We’ll lose control

And it feels like giving in
It feels like starting over
It feels like waking up, and you know it’s coming
It feels like a brand new day
Open your eyes
(Chorus)
Lifted high,
Lifted high,

Monday's Master Moment #43

God created our bodies in such a way that they can repair themselves when damaged. If you break a bone over time cells will mend the break. If you cut your flesh it will eventually grow new tissue over the opening and heal. Is the new tissue the same? Most of the time there is what we call scars. The scar is sometimes raised from the skin, or another tone of skin color. Many people are ashamed of scars because it shows a slight imperfection in there body. Others wear them proudly because they came through great trial and sacrifice such as fighting to protect our freedoms in this great nation. The scars that are worn by most are not always visible. They are deep within, they have been caused by friends, relatives, spouses, and parents. Many of these scars are even self-inflicted. These are the scars of SIN.

I know in my life sin has caused many wounds not only to myself, but to the people around me as well. I have lied, cheated, stolen, cursed, and the list goes on and on. Sometimes it was a little paper cut of gossip, but at other times it was the sweeping swing of the sword that cut deep into the heart. How do these wounds get healed? Our bodies weren't made to repair and restore wounds of this magnitude. Why didn't our Creator design us to heal emotional scars? I don't know the answer to why, but I do know the answer of who. Who can heal these blemishes and lacerations of emotions and character? God

In Psalm 147 he says "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up there wounds" . God is the only source of healing our emotional wounds. We can look to other places to find comfort and healing. This world offers drugs, alcohol, sex, pornography, and religions. All these seem to help for a short while, but never have lasting and sustainable results. The drugs wear off, early morning hangovers, sexually transmitted diseases, broken marriages and false hopes are the only guaranteed results of the worlds answers.

The only one true answer is a life of surrender to the our creator and life giving God. He promises to heal and restore what is broken and lost. Sounds easy and simple? Yes and no, it is easy to say yes to him with words, but can you say it with your life? Can you turn over all your thoughts, words, and actions to him on a daily basis? For me it was not easy, but so beneficial. It can be an hour by hour process or day by day. All he wants is you to make the first step toward him.........

Grace's senior photos

Monday evening, Grace Alicia and I spent the evening in Yellow Springs creating Grace's senior photos. What an impressive young lady. Grace has truly endured a lot and has risen above so much. Her mother is from Panama, father from Trinidad. She is transplant from New York City. After 911 her family moved here as her father worked in the city and it was time to get away. She is the youngest girl of seven children and recently lost her father to congestive heart failure. Throughout all of this Grace has managed to earn a full ride scholarship to Howard University. She truly has overcome adversity "gracefully." We wish her nothing but much success and happiness in her life.

robbie's senior photos

Last week I had the pleasure to photograph baseball phenom, Robbie Holt. Even though it is getting late in the year Fischink Photography continues to be booking 2009 seniors. Robbie was a blast and a very humble individual for all the talent he has in that right arm of his. We want to wish Robbie much continued success in his future college baseball years.

Last weekend Shannon and I had the pleasure to photograph Logan for his senior photos. We had an absolute best. Logan was possibly one of the best male students we have worked with. Honestly... I believe he should pursue modeling. See for yourself.

Light & commerce workshop

Thus past Sunday I had the pleasure to be a part of David Bean's Light & Commerce workshop. David, a celebrity photographer, from Nashville Tennessee spent the better half of the day instructing us on lighting and business practice. It was a wonderful perspective to hear from someone who has climbed his way to the top in a very short amount of time. The one thing I continue to hear from many top level photographers is customer service. As we continue to grow our business I am dedicated to continually make my clients feel special. God has blessed me with an incredible life and opportunities. I hope I can continue to bless those that I get to work with.
